Economic and societal stakes, in Europe and worldwide...

The MAUD cluster fully falls within the framework of the European guiding line (“The Lisbon strategy”, the Goteborg European council) :

Implementation, through multilateral governance, of a model of sustainable development aiming to reconcile with economic growth, social cohesion (employment) and environment protection”.

More competitive companies

Globalization speeds economic competition up. It is the source of numerous opportunities but remains one of the greatest challenge for our territories.

Innovation as a factor in economic growth

The EEC undertakes to promote and to favor innovation in all its forms. Innovation is the basis of the acquisition of competitive advantages in response to market needs.

The normative pressure as a stimulus to innovation

The standardization is one of the keys to develop sustainable industrial policies. It boosts innovation on markets and guarantees competitiveness for companies.

The « knowledge triangle »

Le triangle de la connaissance

The research & development policy is one of the European priorities. The research together with education and companies makes the “knowledge triangle” which has to allow to preserve economic dynamism and social model.

Employment in the line of sight

The European objective of sustainable development : “social welfare and working conditions in a sustainable way for present & future generations” depend partly on the employment level and quality.
The economic growth and employment are linked closely to objectives of both social cohesion & environment.

In the eyes of economic, societal and environmental stakes, the Materials & Applications for a Sustainable Use are an industrial & services component in coherence with expectations and future needs of European citizens & consumers.

3 innovation axes

The identification and implementation of differentiating factors are a strategic key of company competitiveness. The cluster leans on 3 innovation axes :

  • Development of new products, processes and/or services

  • Improvement of material features

  • Integration of Sustainable Development

Concerning this third axis, one of the stakes is to encourage manufacturers to integrate the European regulation “Reach” (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of CHemicals) for a “softer” chemistry, environment and life-friendly, in their preparations & products.

3 key markets

These innovation axes find their expression on 3 economic markets which make up the key markets of the MAUD competitiveness cluster :

  • Tableware

  • Graphic industries

  • Packaging

On each of these markets, the ambition is to bring companies to identify and implement their levers of economic growth and productivity.

On international markets where “price competitiveness” is fierce, only value creation will allow companies to go on developing & getting a positive lever effect upon employment.

3 major stakes

Innovation and value creation are two strategic ambitions of the MAUD cluster. Their stake is to act locally upon :

  • Growth of small & medium-sized industries, together with territorial impact

  • Technological transfer and increased prestige of competences

  • Synergy between partners

Global thinking for local action

The competitiveness cluster development can be expected only with an international level : to penetrate the European & international excellence networks through its ability to :

  •  Initiate project building, for instance through the services of laboratories on precise set of themes
  • Increase the critical mass of knowledge & competences (crossed fertilization) to reinforce the area appeal
  • Use the normative & statutory pressure, and anticipate market needs (“weak signals”) in order to favor project setting-up and their operational results

4 technological fields, in coherence with Key technologies 2010

The MAUD cluster leans on 4 technological fields to cover large domains of use for Materials & Applications for a Sustainable Use :

  • Materials

  • Deposits

  • Features

  • Functions

Each of these technological fields is tuned into some of these Key technologies 2010, grouped together in technological clusters identified as real regional opportunities.

Plan of action

The strategic axes where the MAUD cluster intervenes come in 3 domains :

  • Leading – to federate players and to structure their exchanges
  • Engineering & expertise – to favor innovation and to accompany projects
  • Promotion – to increase the MAUD cluster area and to develop its territory

Every axis receives a series of objectives & actions. The whole makes up the MAUD cluster plan of action through 3 strategic axes and 21 operational measures, subject to indicators.
